Food Service Worker Certificate program

What You’ll Learn

The Food Service Worker Certificate is a practical, career-focused program designed to prepare you for entry-level roles in restaurants, cafeterias, catering companies, hospitals, schools, and long-term care homes. In just a few weeks, you’ll develop job-ready skills in safe food handling, allergen awareness, temperature control, cleaning and sanitizing, food preparation, and customer service.

Through real-world scenarios and applied learning, you’ll master the habits professional kitchens run on — from the five-step allergy protocol and the temperature danger zone to serving customers with dignity and working calmly as part of a team under pressure. You’ll finish with the knowledge, the kitchen language, and a first-week plan that walks into your new job with you.

Why This Program

Built for people ready to work in the industry that feeds Canada.

Food service spans restaurants, hospital kitchens, school cafeterias, long-term care dining rooms, catering companies, and the contract food service firms that run kitchens across Ontario. It’s one of the province’s largest employers — and it welcomes trained people at the start of their careers. This certificate gives you the foundational skills employers consistently look for: safe food handling, allergen awareness, sanitation, and professional customer service.

Master contamination control, the temperature danger zone, and the habits that protect every customer.

Respond to allergies with confidence

Learn Canada’s priority allergens and the five-step protocol professional kitchens use for every allergy order.

Run a clean, organized station

Apply professional cleaning and sanitizing methods, WHMIS chemical safety, and mise en place.

Serve every customer well

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this certificate recognized by employers in Ontario?
Yes. York College is a registered career college under the Ontario Career Colleges Act, 2005. Our certificates are recognized by employers across Ontario’s food service and hospitality sector.
Is this the same as a food handler certificate?
They work together. This certificate is a complete 40-hour training program covering food safety, kitchen operations, customer service, and workplace skills. Ontario separately requires at least one certified food handler on duty in most food premises — a short exam-based certification offered by public health units and approved providers. Our program teaches exactly the territory that exam covers, so completing your food handler certification afterward is a natural next step, and the two credentials together are the strongest combination a new applicant can show.
Can I complete this while working full-time?
Absolutely. The program is 100% online and self-paced. Most students complete it in 6 weeks while working full-time and managing family responsibilities. You can study evenings, weekends, or whenever fits your schedule.
Do I need previous experience in food service?
No. This program is designed for complete beginners as well as workers already on the job who want to formalize their skills. We teach fundamentals from the ground up — and your experience from retail, factory work, or caring for a household translates more than you might think.
Is financial aid or payment plans available?
Yes. We offer flexible payment plans starting at $195 to start with no credit check required. Some students may qualify for EI-funded training. Contact our enrolment team to discuss your options.
What kinds of jobs does this prepare me for?
Food service worker and kitchen helper roles in restaurants, cafés, and catering; cafeteria roles in schools and campuses; and dietary aide roles in hospitals, retirement homes, and long-term care. The industry hires in every Ontario city, and contract food service companies post positions year-round.

Funding & Financial Support

ESDC-Certified Institution · Tuition eligible for federal tax credits

Can I get funding to cover the cost of this program?
Yes — several options exist. The most common is Better Jobs Ontario, a provincial grant covering up to $28,000 for short-term training (including micro-credentials). Other options include the Canada Training Credit, employer sponsorship, and our flexible payment plans. Read our full guide to funding career training in Ontario →
What is Better Jobs Ontario and do I qualify?

Better Jobs Ontario (formerly Second Career) helps unemployed and low-income Ontarians retrain for in-demand careers. As of January 2026:

  • Up to $28,000 for training under 52 weeks (including micro-credentials and certificates)
  • Up to $35,000 for 1–2 year programs
  • Covers tuition, books, transportation, living allowance, and dependent care

You may qualify if you’ve been laid off, unemployed for 12+ weeks, or are receiving EI, Ontario Works, or ODSP. Eligibility now also includes gig workers, newcomers, and self-employed individuals. All York College programs fall within the eligible duration.

Important: You must be approved through an Employment Ontario service provider before starting your training. Learn more →

What if I don’t qualify for government funding?

You still have options:

  • Employer sponsorship — many employers cover tuition as professional development
  • Canada Training Credit — refundable federal tax credit for Canadians 26–65 with earned income (eligible for our short certificates and micro-credentials)
  • Tuition Tax Credit — claimable through T2202 for our vocational diploma programs
  • Flexible payment plans — start now with a small initial payment

Consult a tax advisor or visit canada.ca for guidance on tax credit eligibility.

Will I receive a T2202 tax form?

Yes — for our vocational diploma programs. You’ll receive your T2202 by the end of February following the tax year, which can be used to claim the federal Tuition Tax Credit.

For our short certificate courses and micro-credentials, T2202 forms are not issued due to our self-paced format, but tuition may still qualify for the Canada Training Credit. Please consult a tax advisor or visit canada.ca for guidance.

How do I find out which funding options are available to me?
Email our advisory team at admissions@yorkc.ca and we’ll help identify every option that fits your situation. For Better Jobs Ontario specifically, contact your local Employment Ontario service provider before enrolling — funding requires pre-approval.
